When is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 release date?

9 August 2018. The Galaxy Note 9 will launch in New York at 11am EDT (4pm BST) on Thursday. The leaked video above suggests it will be available to pre-order immediately, with a suspected on-sale date of 24 August.

What is the Note 9 price?

£869 felt shockingly high when it was announced as the RRP of the Note 8 in 2017, but don’t expect to be any less shocked by pricing for the new Note 9. Do remember that Samsung phones quickly fall in price within a few months, and right now you can pick up the Note 8 from Amazon for £587.

What is new in the Galaxy Note 9?

  • A slightly larger 6.4in screen (up from 6.3in) with slimmer screen bezels
  • Faster Snapdragon 845/Exynos 9810 processor
  • A higher-capacity 4000mAh battery (up from 3300mAh)
  • Faster wireless charging
  • An enhanced dual-camera with ISOCELL Plus technology
  • Upgraded S Pen stylus with Bluetooth support
  • Bixby 2.0
  • Tipped to have the exclusive on Fortnite for Android for the first few months

Are there any design changes in the Note 9?

Nothing major. Despite reports that the screen glass is fractionally thinner the chassis is expected to increase very slightly. It will be 0.2mm thicker and 1.3mm wider than the Note 8, likely to accommodate for a slightly larger screen and higher-capacity battery, which will also make it a bit heavier. A 1.1mm reduction in height suggests further slimming down of the top and bottom bezels, but both will remain present (don’t believe reports that Samsung will ditch this bottom bezel).

We’ll also see the fingerprint scanner move to a new location, but that’s not visible in the first official Note 9 render. However, you can see it clearly in this leaked video of a Note 9.

Will the Note 9 have an in-display fingerprint scanner?

No. Despite our optimism earlier this year, the Note 9 is not going to be the first Samsung Galaxy flagship to feature a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display. The scanner has moved, though, and now lies below the horizontally aligned dual-camera at the rear. It’s not what we were hoping for, but it will at least prevent accidental smudging of the camera lens while unlocking the phone.

Will the Note 9 have a headphone jack?

Yes. The headphone jack is present in all the case renders we’ve seen, such as those provided by accessory supplier MobileFun, and we’ve seen or heard nothing to suggest otherwise.

Will the Note 9 have a notch screen?

No. There is no evidence of Samsung following Apple, LG, and others down this route.

What colors will the Note 9 come in?

Bluecoppersilverviolet and black, according to a render published by Hi-Tech.Mail and visible below.

How fast is the Note 9?

Incredibly fast. Multiple Geekbench 4 results of the Exynos model spotted by Sammobile go as high as 3716 single-core and 9064 multi-core. The Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ gave similar results in our own tests.

Putting that into perspective, in our tests we recorded 2014 single-core and 6822 multi-core from the Note 8 (Snapdragon variant).

Is the S Pen getting an upgrade?

Yes. Our sources say new Bluetooth support will allow it to perform additional functions such as controlling the selfie camera and music playback, plus the ability to make calls. As usual, it’s precision will likely also be refined.

What about the camera?

Expect an improved camera. As before you’ll find a dual-camera at the rear, but now with Samsung’s ISOCELL Plus technology. This improves light sensitivity by up to 15% and increases colour fidelity, with more accurate shots in low-light, by allowing the sensor to capture more light.

Will the Note 9 run Android P?

No – at least not at launch. The Note 9 and Android P launch dates are expected to fall within a couple of weeks of each other, so you’ll be waiting a short while for Samsung to prepare the new operating system for the Note 9. The new Galaxy Note will ship with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

What about Bixby?

Bixby 2.0 should debut with the Note 9. It is said to offer enhanced natural language capabilities, faster response times, and improved noise resistance.
